Modern cell phones hold vast amounts of sensitive information and have become the prime targets for hackers and thieves. In 2024, 70% of online fraud was through mobile platforms (Source: Certo, 2025).
8 things to help you stay safer:
1) Restart your phone
The National Security Agency recommends restarting your phone weekly to clear temporary files, wipe malicious code, and apply security updates.
2) Check for updates
Regularly update your device’s operating system and apps to patch security vulnerabilities:
3) Set a screen lock with a PIN, finger, or face
A screen lock can help protect your phone from theft, identity fraud, and unauthorized access to sensitive data (emails, messages, photos, financial information, etc.).
4) Encrypt your device and messages (if not already enabled)
Most smartphones have built-in encryption options that can help keep your sensitive data private.
5) Enable VPN
Turning on a VPN (Virtual Private Network) on your phone enhances online privacy and security by encrypting internet traffic and masking your IP address. This is especially useful when using public Wi-Fi.
6) Make sure backups is turned on
Regularly backing up your phone to the cloud can help safeguard against data loss due to various reasons like device damage, loss, theft, or software malfunctions.
7) Remove any apps you don’t need
You’re likely have apps on your phone you don’t actively use which may be running older software and have security vulnerabilities.
8) Install antivirus software
Inquire with manufacturer, antivirus can add an extra layer of protection if you download apps from 3rd party sources or handle sensitive information.
